Cab safety

Active safety enhancements

Active safety is all about making the driving of the truck as safe as possible, with the aim of minimising the risk of collisions and other incidents that could lead to injury.

Active safety is centred around giving the driver better feedback and control. Key areas of interest for the new trucks are visibility, handling, braking and stability.

Passive safety encompasses aspects of design aimed at minimising consequences arising from a collision – consequences that affect the driver and the occupants of other vehicles.

Better visibility has been achieved in a number of ways:

  • close-up vision is improved by a different dashboard angle
  • the close-up mirror at the top of the passenger window has been enlarged
  • optional wide-angle driver’s-side mirror
  • optional close-up mirror covering the entire front of the cab, mounted under the external visor
  • wind deflectors on the A-pillars help keep side windows cleaner for longer
  • optional camera compatible with Interactor 600 on-board PC provides additional visibility in blind spots on the passenger side and immediately in front of the truck
  • optional xenon headlights on some air-suspended models afford increased illumination in hours of darkness

Improved handling:

  • enhancements in the steering and chassis provide exceptionally responsive feel and handling
  • a new four-spring air rear suspension on 4x2 models gives even higher standards of stability with a safe and level ride
  • the Scania Retarder can be programmed to automatically maintain a slightly higher downhill speed then the set cruise control speed, to achieve safer, higher average speeds on mountainous routes
  • push-button controls for the Scania Retarder are mounted on the steering wheel
  • Scania Opticruise has been enhanced to give even better driving and better interaction with other vehicle systems such as the Scania Retarder
  • Opticruise controls are mounted on the steering column, for fast and easy finger-tip access

Braking enhancements:

  • EBS (electronic brake system) now available on all air-suspended and most other models with disc brakes
  • the new EBS features brake blending when wheel brakes interact with the Scania Retarder and exhaust brake
  • automatic brake matching between truck and trailer, to apportion braking force where needed for increased stability and even brake wear
  • automatic load calculation matches pedal position and retardation; regardless of load, the same pedal movement generates the same retardation resulting in even, balanced, consistent braking
  • continuous monitoring of brake pad wear, to give even wear and allow cost-effective preventive maintenance

Vehicle stability:

  • ESP (electronic stability program) optional on all 4x2 vehicles with air suspension
  • an advanced system designed to minimise the risk of skidding or roll-over, resulting from driver error, sudden emergencies or unexpected hazardous road surfaces
  • the objective is to help the driver regain full control as soon as possible
