Impact testing includes a frontal crash into a concrete barrier at 40 km/h, and trailerback crashes at 35 km/h. The cabs also have to conform to Swedish cab safety standards, which are the world’s strictest on structural cab strength. Underrun protection is now incorporated into the design of the front bumper, which also performs the role of a spoiler to improve aerodynamic characteristics. Testing of the new system involved creating an offset crash between an Audi A3 passenger car and a Scania truck at a collision speed of 60 km/h. This type of impact (involving 75% of the car’s frontal area) was demonstrated to be survivable without serious injury; car occupants would have been able to get out of the car unaided. The truck driver would have maintained control of the truck. Such conditions following an impact of this type indicate high safety standards of both the car and truck. |
