Cab safety

Passive safety enhancements

In the event of a collision, protection for the driver and passenger could prevent or diminish injury.

The following features, by diminishing such risks, also make it more likely that the driver will retain control of the vehicle, helping to prevent secondary impacts and their consequences.

  • the hard structure of the dashboard is behind a knee-protection beam, with outer surfaces designed to yield on impact without cracking
  • in the case of a frontal impact, the steering column is designed to absorb kinetic energy and assume a position that meets with the driver’s chest bone (the strongest bone in the upper torso)
  • integrated seat belts adjust the driver’s height, thus staying close to the chest giving both better comfort and protection
  • P-series and R-series vehicles can have belt pre-tensioners and airbags to afford even greater protection
  • the glued-in windscreen adds more body to the cab structure and gives added protection in a roll-over accident
