Scania believes that permitting longer vehicles on the roads reduces the risk of accidents. Based on many years' experience e.g. from the Scandinavian countries, it is possible to take up to 50% more load on a single vehicle combination without jeopardising safety. Fewer vehicles simply leads to fewer hazards.
Scania's concept for a safe long vehicle is a combination of a three-axle rigid that pulls a semitrailer placed on a dolly. This offers significant safety benefits and also considerable cost benefits for operators. Combinations of up to 25.25 metres are frequently used in Sweden and Finland today and trials have started in other countries. Ideal applications are for example traffic between terminals, multi-mode transport, container haulage, etc. - 25.25 metres long
- 50% more load
- 40-60 tonnes fully laden
- 20% less fuel per tonne
- Proportional drop in emissions
- Manoeuvrability matches 16.5-metre tractor-semitrailer combination
- Could reduce number of trucks by 33%
