The lowering of the environmental impact focuses on improving fuel economy and reducing emissions, preventing and phasing-out dangerous substances as well as preparing for responsible handling of vehicles when they come to the end of their working life.
Fuel economy and emissions
With the P- and R-series trucks, fuel economy has been further improved by up to 3 percent. This, thanks to improved aerodynamics, smarter control of engine auxiliaries as well as weight reduction.
Scania offers a complete range of Euro 4 engines that features reductions of NOx emissions by 30 percent and particulates emissions by 80 percent compared with Euro 3. With Scania’s in-house engine management system we balance nitrogen oxides and particulates against the required emission limits and get optimum fuel economy for each individual engine. Scania customers can thus choose a truck with very good environmental performance that complies with legal requirement that apply from October 2006. Customers able to benefit from road fee and tax incentives in some countries also have a choice of two Euro 5 engines primarily intended for long-haulage.
Hazardous substances
Scania strives to prevent the use of hazardous substances in our trucks. When developing the cab each design engineer has checked the chemical content of the materials used. The ambition has been to phase-out hazardous substances.
End-of-life treatment
Although it may seem distant today, the P- and R-series trucks will be dismantled and recycled one day. Since several years, Scania issues dismantling information and material labelling for its trucks to guide dismantlers to perform end-of-life treatment in an environmentally suitable and safe way.
